Marketing Smarter Through AI

MARKETING SMARTER THROUGH AI
Why AI should help dealers strengthen relationships, not replace them
AI is one of the most important conversations happening in automotive retail today. Everywhere you look, someone is talking about artificial intelligence, automation, predictive marketing, customer engagement, and how technology is going to change the way dealerships operate.
I have no doubt that AI is going to have a major impact on the dealership business…But I also believe dealers need to look at AI the right way, to ensure a positive impact.
AI should never replace dealership relationships. It should never replace the trust a customer has with the store. It should never replace the service advisor who knows the customer, the BDC agent who follows up professionally, or the manager who understands the local market. Automotive retail is still a relationship business, and I do not see that changing.
What AI can do is help dealerships become smarter, more efficient, and more precise in how they identify opportunities and communicate with customers.
That is where the real value is.
For years, dealers have been told to market more. Send more emails. Send more mail. Make more calls. Run more ads. Push more offers. But more activity does not always mean better results. In many cases, it just means more noise, more waste, and more disconnected communication.
The better question is not, “How do we send more marketing?”
The better question is, “How do we market smarter?”
That is where AI can make a real difference, but only when it is built on clean, accurate, usable data.
If a dealership does not know who the customer really is, what vehicle they actually own, whether they are still in market, what service history belongs to them, what they have declined, what recalls are open, or how they prefer to be contacted, AI cannot create and maximize an effective strategy. It will simply work from whatever information is available, even if that information is inaccurate.
That is why I believe AI and data quality have to be part of the same conversation.
AI can help dealers identify the right customers, but the data has to be clean enough to trust. AI can help prioritize opportunities, but the opportunity has to be real. AI can help improve communication, but the message has to be relevant. AI can help make marketing more efficient, but only if the dealership is not feeding it duplicate records, outdated ownership information, bad addresses, invalid emails, disconnected phone numbers, and customers who no longer live within a realistic service area.
The technology is powerful, but the foundation still matters.
At Dealerwing, this is exactly where we start. We believe marketing performance begins with the customer data. Before a campaign is launched, before an audience is built, before AI is used to identify opportunities, the dealership needs to understand what is really inside the database.
Who still owns the vehicle?
Who is still in market?
Who is loyal?
Who is at risk?
Who has defected?
Who bought from the dealership but never serviced there?
Who has declined work that still needs to be completed?
Who has an open recall?
Who represents a high-value customer pay opportunity?
Who is sitting in the DMS under multiple customer numbers?
Those questions matter because every one of them affects how the dealership should communicate.
A loyal service customer should not be treated the same as a lost customer. A customer who bought from the dealership but never came back for service should not receive the same message as someone who has been in the drive every six months. A customer with declined service needs a different follow-up strategy than a customer with an open recall. A customer who moved 80 miles away may need a different approach than someone who lives five miles from the store.
That is what smarter marketing looks like.
It is not one message going to everyone.
It is the right message going to the right customer based on real information.
AI can help dealers make those distinctions faster and more effectively than a manual process ever could. It can help organize customers into meaningful segments. It can help identify which opportunities should be prioritized. It can support better timing. It can break down target areas, like zip codes, into metrics that can only be dreamed about…doing it manually, and subsequently, it can help dealers understand where the highest-value opportunities are hiding inside the database.
But AI should not be viewed as a shortcut around dealership discipline. It should be viewed as a tool that helps the dealership execute better.
The people still matter.
The process still matters.
The message still matters.
The follow-up still matters.
The customer experience still matters.
AI simply helps make all of that more focused.
One of the biggest benefits of AI in dealership marketing is segmentation. Most dealerships have far more opportunity in their database than they realize, but that opportunity is often buried under bad records, duplicate customer profiles, incomplete service history, outdated ownership information, and disconnected vendor systems.
When the data is cleaned and organized properly, AI can help identify groups of customers that deserve different strategies.
Lost customers may need a reason to return.
At-risk customers may need a timely reminder before they defect.
Loyal customers may need consistent communication that reinforces the dealership relationship.
Sold-not-serviced customers may need education about why the dealership is the best place to service their vehicle.
Declined service customers may need a follow-up message that connects the recommended work to safety, reliability, or vehicle longevity.
Recall customers may need clear, direct communication that makes scheduling easy.
High-value customer pay customers may need a more strategic outreach plan.
That kind of segmentation gives dealers a better way to use their marketing dollars.
Instead of treating every name in the database the same, the dealership can focus on the customers who represent the best opportunities and communicate with them in a way that makes sense.
That is not replacing relationships.
That is improving them.
When a customer receives a message that is timely, relevant, and connected to their actual vehicle, it feels different. It does not feel like a generic promotion. It feels like the dealership understands them. It feels like the dealership is paying attention.
That matters because customers have more choices than ever.
They can go to an independent shop. They can go to a tire store. They can go to a quick service provider. They can ignore the dealership completely after the warranty period if the dealership does not stay connected in a meaningful way.
Retention is not automatic.
It has to be earned.
AI can help dealers earn it by making communication more relevant and more consistent. But again, it starts with the data. If the dealership is marketing to a customer who no longer owns the vehicle, the message is irrelevant. If the customer is duplicated across multiple records, the communication may be incorrect and inaccurate. If the service history is incomplete, the timing may be wrong. If the ownership record is outdated, the campaign may be wasted before it starts.
That is why clean data, AI, and marketing strategy have to work together.
Another major benefit of AI is prioritization. In most dealerships, there are more possible opportunities than the team can manually sort through every day. The BDC cannot call everyone. The service team cannot personally follow up with every customer. The marketing department cannot manually analyze every ownership record, service record, declined service opportunity, recall file, and customer lifecycle stage.
AI can help dealers prioritize.
It can help identify which customers should be contacted first, which opportunities may be worth more, which segments need immediate attention, and which customers may be better suited for lower-cost communication channels.
That creates efficiency.
A BDC agent spending time on a bad phone number, a sold vehicle, or a customer who moved out of market is not cost-efficient and definitely not creating value. That same agent spending time on a validated, high-priority customer with a real service opportunity can make a meaningful difference.
That is where AI helps people do their jobs better.
It does not replace the BDC.
It helps the BDC focus.
It does not replace the service advisor.
It helps bring better opportunities back into the service lane.
It does not replace the manager.
It gives leadership better visibility into where the opportunities are and how marketing is performing.
Dealers also need to think about AI and reporting. One of the long-standing issues in dealership marketing is attribution. Too many reports look impressive but do not really tell the dealer what happened. Too many vendors want to claim credit for customers who may have come in anyway. Too many campaigns are measured from inflated audiences or questionable data.
AI does not fix attribution by itself.
In fact, if the data is not clean, AI can make reporting look more impressive, or much worse, both options being completely unreliable.
That is why Dealerwing focuses on building campaigns around cleaner audiences, stronger segmentation, and more transparent reporting. Dealers need to know who was targeted, why they were targeted, what message they received, which channels were used, what action they took, and whether the campaign reasonably influenced the result.
That is how better decisions get made.
Leadership should not have to guess whether marketing is working. They should not have to accept vague reporting or inflated claims. They should be able to see where the opportunities are coming from and how the campaign is performing.
Smarter marketing is not just about communication.
It is also about accountability.
The future of dealership marketing will not be one channel. It will not be only email, only direct mail, only text, only social, only BDC, or only AI. Customers respond in different ways, and dealers need coordinated communication that works across channels.
That is another place where Dealerwing helps.
Our approach is built around activating clean data across multiple channels so the dealership can reach customers in the way that makes the most sense for the opportunity. Direct mail may be the right channel for one campaign. Email may be right for another. SMS may be appropriate for certain customers and certain situations. Social media and digital targeting may support broader awareness. Phone follow-up may be needed for higher-value opportunities. Everyone should get the opportunity to receive marketing through all the channels, and then they can decide.
The key is that the strategy should be driven by the customer and the opportunity, not by a one-size-fits-all campaign.
AI can help support that decision-making.
It can help determine which audiences should be prioritized, which messages should be delivered, and where the dealership may have gaps in retention, recall completion, declined service recovery, or lifecycle marketing.
But the dealer still needs a partner that understands the business.
That is one of the reasons Dealerwing was built the way it was. We are not just looking at marketing from a software perspective. We understand dealerships. We understand fixed operations. We understand that a service department is not just a necessity. Fixed Ops is one of the most important and integral contributors to a dealership’s profitability and success. We understand what is at stake. Dealers need results they can confidently measure and cost-effective strategies they can actually use.
AI should help dealers become better operators.
It should help them uncover hidden opportunities.
It should help them reduce waste.
It should help them improve retention.
It should help them communicate more effectively.
It should help them protect customer relationships, not replace them.
That is the real opportunity.
At Dealerwing, we help dealers bring those pieces together. We clean and validate the data, identify the real opportunities, build smarter audiences, support coordinated campaigns, and give dealerships better visibility into what is working.
That is how AI becomes practical.
That is how marketing becomes more efficient.
That is how fixed ops growth becomes more measurable.
And that is how dealers turn their customer database into one of the most valuable assets in the store.
